Araujo set to turn down United and Liverpool as confirms new talks with Barca

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is set to turn down the advances of Liverpool and Manchester United after confirming talks over a new deal at Barcelona will take place this week.

Reports last month claimed Liverpool and Chelsea – prior to the UK Government’s sanctioning of Roman Abramovich – had expressed an interest in the Uruguayan, whose current deal at Camp Nou expires in the summer of 2023.

Man United have also been looking at the 23-year-old centre-back in their bid to sign a world-class player in his position amid the uncertainty of Harry Maguire’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

But Araujo has seemingly put any chance of a summer move to the Premier League to bed after claiming he hopes to stay with the Catalan giants ‘for many years’.

‘I am very happy to be here and happy with the support of the club,’ Araujo said after Barcelona made it six consecutive LaLiga victories following their 1-0 win against Sevilla on Sunday night.

‘We are working on the renewal. This week we have a meeting.

‘I hope it will be resolved soon so that I can continue many years at this club. I am optimistic.’

Sport claimed earlier this week Araujo has only received one contract offer from the Catalan giants, which was rejected, and the report added the two parties remain far apart in terms of their demands.

It comes after Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste’s confidence last month that they could persuade Araujo as well as fellow youngster Gavi to stay at the club beyond 2023.

‘We are working to the best of our abilities to keep Gavi and Araújo at the club.

‘I am optimistic. The players are happy here. If [Ousmane] Dembele continues to feel comfortable, we can meet his agents and he could stay.’

Araujo was signed by Barcelona in August of 2018, leaving Uruguayan outfit Boston River to link up with the club’s B team.

The centre-back went on to feature 44 times for Barca B, scoring six times and assisting another three goals in the process.

Since then, he has been promoted to the first-team, and has now become a key cog in Barcelona’s backline.

In total, Araujo has made 73 appearances across all competitions for the Catalan side, 34 of which have come during the current campaign.

The defender has found the net four times in 23 games in LaLiga this season.
